The Mexican Riviera Maya is coastal land which encompasses many different towns including Playa del Carmen, Akumal, Chemuyil and Tulum. Tulums eco-tourism is best seen along the Hotel Zone where you will see solar panels sunning themselves on rooftops, windmills swirling around making energy and generators to add to the needed supplies. CEA the turtle sanctuary, on Xcacel beach where they teach about and work with the turtles to help keep them from extinction. Playa del Carmen is bustling with energy and attraction.You can spend time shopping, people watching, walking the interesting st.or you can take the ferry over to the Island of Cozumel,Mexico. A town just 20 min south of PDC is Akumal. Its a small town with some high end homes and accommodations with many beautiful beaches. Next you come to Chemuyil. A sleepy little Mexican town where everyone knows each other. Across the highway from Chemuyil is an eco-beach Xcacel & Xcacelito.They are reserved as Turtle Sanctuarys but are open to the public during the day. Now you coast down the highway another 15 min and you have reached Tulum. The hippy/bohemiam town is just on the verge of its growth. It became a municipality in 2008 and there is rumored a proposed Airport is being built. The highway connecting all of these beach towns is called HWY 307 and it goes from Cancun to Chetumal. Chemuyil is a 10 min drive south from Akumal and is a smaller town with a sub-division called Chan Chemuyil and is made up of mostly foreigners. Tulum is a larger coastal town with famous ruins to visit. In this diverse town you will find many high end accommodations and restaurants and many backpacker style too. The Mexican Riveria Maya ~ has a great array of things to do and will keep you busy for many weeks on end.
